Fashion Friday: Valentino: The Italian Emperor of Parisian Couture

Disappointment and dismay hit the headlines as I viewed the Paris couture shows this morning, and a feeling of couture disillusionment hit me. Has the idea of Couture traversed so far from its course that the designers and houses have lost the real meaning of fashion?

The dark dreary sci-fi spectacle at Chanel felt forced, with a glittery backdrop so near asphalt it quite possibly distracted me enough from the ensembles to not feel as if John Galliano snuck backstage and cut layers of silk taffeta, donned the models in star gazers, and walked a costumey collection through a planetarium for a house whose heritage swings so far to wearable, beautiful, pieces of art.

Not to mention the Dior collection, sans Galliano, which seemed to fair better without. Although they tried a little bit of everything and A LOT of a few things, they sent a fair number of construction projects down the runway, albeit in a color palette of the opposite season. Why not skip Fall and jump straight ahead to Spring? Get past the bad press! A little jump of the gun is expected to hit the man who's suddenly in charge of the keys to the kingdom, or in this case, the flamenco factory....

Now, I can't even sew a pant seam, so while I may seem a little harsh, I have by no means ever walked in the footsteps of the individuals creating and designing these garments. Its just that it's couture. And some seasons I'm in awe, and others questionable of the direction of a breed already on the brink of extension. I know not every Chanel collection can be birthed from a lion, but I do know the duo at Valentino (Maria and Pier) hit the mark on a house whose been so hit or miss since Mr. Valentino's retirement, that this collection will thrust the brand back into the Emperor's hand.
